ABOUT BECCLES MEN’S SHED
From how we started, how we evolved, who we are, what we do and where we are today
What we do
Meet regularly, laugh, make friends and find time for some carpentry work.
HOW IT STARTED
At the end of August 2017 a meeting was held in Beccles Library to see if there would be any interest in forming a Men’s Shed in Beccles. There was! From nine at the first meeting word spread and numbers grew. A Committee of five was formed and the group was formally established. With a logo and a bank account we were ready to get started.
the next step
In November 2017 we were offered temporary premises in one of the villages just outside Beccles and the activities began. Shelves were put up; benches made and donated timber stacked. We achieved Charity status in January 2018. People have been kind and donated tools and materials to enable us to make goods for sale to help us raise funds to run the shed.
Members enjoy working on various projects in the Shed. These include various Planters, Bird Tables and Bird Boxes, a Tombola and a Log store. Other activities are carved wooden spoons and a set of refurbished chairs and tables. At Beccles Library you can see different styles of planters and compost bins and at the local Church a beautifully restored bench for the Inner Wheel.
Our members enjoy friendship, conversation and friendly banter in the Shed, while joining in the various projects. People that were lonely or isolated soon realise they can join in, make friends and know their efforts are valued. Although we are a ‘Men’s Shed’ ladies are welcome to join us.
How you can help
If you have tools or wood you no longer need we welcome donations and can collect from you. We have received some generous grants and donations and these will help towards achieving our permanent home. All fund-raising is appreciated to ensure the success of the Shed.
the way forward
In Spring 2019 we leased a plot of land in Beccles and have now positioned a large container on the site. There is lots to do to turn this empty shell into our new workshop and this will be out main project for a few months. Come along and say hello or meet us at Worlingham Fete later in the year.
OPEN DAY SUCCESS On Saturday 25th September we held our fist open day and were pleased to welcome our deputy mayor Ashley Lever and councillor Caroline Topping . The day was a great success with a good turn out giving the members an opportunity to explain what we...
Members of the UK Men’s Sheds Association
“They’re community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun”
“UK Men’s Sheds Association is the support body for Men’s Sheds across the UK. We provide support in a number of ways to individuals and groups wanting to start Sheds. We also provide lifetime support to existing Men’s Sheds, helping them to stay safe and sustainable for years to come.”
